(Pablo Neruda)<br />\r\n<br />\r\nAbout the Exhibition:<br />\r\nMirus Gallery has invited several artists to participate in “Aletheia” a group exhibition titled after “a Greek word variously translated as \\\"unclosedness\\\", \\\"unconcealedness\\\", \\\"disclosure\\\" or \\\"truth\\\". The literal meaning of the word ?–<br />\r\n?????? is \\\"the state of not being hidden; the state of being evident.\\\" It also means factuality or reality.” When confronted with the roster of exhibiting artists you can relate the level of realism in each of their work. Yet you will have to dig deeper when viewing and establish an understanding of this new unconcealedness.<br />\r\n“Aletheia” opens the conversation about truth through the idea of representation and realism. In our new age of abstract art and postmodern conceptualism artists that work with realist work has taken a back<br />\r\nseat to these emerging art forms. With this exhibition we take a deeper look into emerging realist painters in a postmodern landscape of theory and critical discussion. Sie exotisieren oder kritisieren den sozial Anderen jedoch nicht; vielmehr macht ihre Tonalität, die spielerisch Ikonografie, Zitate und visuelle Wortspiele annimmt, den Humor zum zentralen Moment. Seine Arbeit steht somit in einem einzigartigen Zusammenspiel autodidaktischer, autobiografischer und sozial gesinnter Kunstpraxis.<br />\r\nDie Werke des niederländischen Künstlers Gijs van Lith (*1984 in den Niederlanden, lebt und arbeitet in ’s-Hertogenbosch) verzerren spielerisch unsere Erwartungen und unser grundlegendes Verständnis dessen, was ein Gemälde sein kann oder sollte. Er treibt die Ideen des Action Painting, des abstrakten Expressionismus und des Tachismus bis zum Äußersten und sucht nach einem Gemälde, das nur aus Gesten und Rohmaterial besteht. Dies verbindet ihn mit einer Reihe von Künstlern, die eine grundlegende Sinnlosigkeit in ihrer Arbeit ohne ein Gefühl postmoderner Ironie umarmen.<br />\r\nDavid Rosado (*1976 in Evora, Portugal, lebt und arbeitet in Lissabon) untersucht in seiner Arbeit die Normen von Identität und Kultur in unserer modernen Gesellschaft. Zwerge und andere Disney-ähnliche Figuren, lächelnde aufblasbare Tiere, mit Acryl grazil auf die rohen Leinwände gemalt, referenzieren das paradoxe und unterschwellige Umfeld unserer Kindheit. The exhibition, titled after the Roman God Janus, explores the symbolism of transition and new beginnings. Kydd reckons with middle-age as a woman, mother, wife, artist and human being, presenting images that convey the drift of time that carries our memories into nostalgia. As women in the early stages of a new paradigm, it is the responsibility of female elders to tell our stories. With Janus Rising, Kydd considers a different future and identity as her role as a mother starts to shift. Arolsen, Germany, 1861; d. Oakville, Canada, 1943) and Violet Keene Perinchief (b. Bath, UK, 1893; d. Oakville, Canada, 1987).<br />\r\n<br />\r\nThis exhibition brings together two generations of work by famed photographers from the early 20th Century. A mother and daughter who each operated commercial photography studios and excelled in the art of photography while exhibiting their award-winning photographic prints in international salon exhibitions. Their work was last presented together in the group exhibition “REDISCOVERY, Canadian Women Photographers 1841-1941”, curated by Laura Jones. This exhibition opened at London Regional Art Gallery on May 13, 1983 and was also presented in four additional galleries including the Art Gallery of Ontario in 1984. <br />\r\n<br />\r\nThis exhibition highlights examples of the different methods of their photographic practice which spans from the 1890s through the 1940s. Minna Keene, née Bergman, lived in Britain, South Africa, and Canada. She emigrated to the United Kingdom between 1870-1880 and married Caleb Keene, a noted painter and decorator. Minna was a member of the London Salon of Photography and in 1908 was the first woman to be admitted as a Fellow to the Royal Photographic Society. She was also asked to join the Linked Ring in the final year of that illustrious circle. <br />\r\n<br />\r\nMinna’s first photographic work was of plant life, for which she made exposures during different stages of growth. Later, she made a successful series of ornithological photographs that illustrated English textbooks which remained in use over several decades. In 1903 Minna emigrated to Cape Town, South Africa, and made studies of Boer life while operating an active photography studio and raising two children. She exhibited her photographs of Boer life at the Lyceum Club, London, in April 1907. In 1910 she exhibited in the Fifty-fifth Annual Exhibition of the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain, and again each year until 1929. In 1911 Minna’s photograph of her daughter Violet entitled Pomegranates, was awarded Picture of the Year at the London Photographic Salon. <br />\r\n<br />\r\nIn late 1913 the Keene family moved to Canada, first settling in Montréal, and then in Toronto. Minna was practising as a professional photographic portraitist and was commissioned by the Canadian Pacific Railway to photograph the Rockies in 1914 and 1915. In 1920 she opened a studio in Toronto and then relocated to Oakville in 1922. <br />\r\n<br />\r\nIn 1926, Minna was featured in a Maclean’s magazine article that mentions the highlights of her career and enthuses about her being a “Home lover!”. In the 1930s Minna continued to exhibit internationally and was assisted in the studio by her daughter, Violet, who eventually succeeded her, and became a photographer in demand and Manager at the Eaton’s photography studio in Toronto on College Street from 1933-1948.
