Event is in ArtWise with address 135 Plymouth St #412, Brooklyn, NY 11201.", "title": "Moon And Sun", "content": "Amongst the themes that have inspired many a creator since artistic expression began, whether it be in forms such as poetry, painting, music, sculpture, performance, songwriting, cave paintings or modern visuals, the celestial bodies of the moon and the sun have graced the myriad feather quills perhaps most of all. Universal in presence, unmatched in power, and unrestricted in interpretation, these two entities have been the mother and father, so to speak, of a wealth of artistic work whose timelessness spans across all eras of art. Shining ceaselessly in their own respective ways, they are always en vogue.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nMarc Chagall hints at the riveting magic that influences lovers in the night in his work Couple Beside Tree, a 1963 Mourlot-printed stone lithograph. It is easy to get lost in the magnetic, swimming composition, full of greenery and visions— hallmarks of Chagall’s allure.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nThis work Moon Phase by an unknown artist is reminiscent of lucid dreams, perhaps half awake and half asleep murmurings emanating from “the other side,” an illuminated place that could be inspired only by something as inexplicable as the moon.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nA signed silkscreen from Jim Buckels, Lago Maggiore encapsulates that early evening bliss, and references the full moon that seems to appear surprisingly large when seen near the horizon as it is rising— a sight that never wanes in amazement.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nErté’s Moonlight is perhaps the spirit of the dark new moon in human form, surrounded by the night sky as she is. Cool and clear, soothing and restorative, this interpretation is both demure and uplifting all at once.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nMax Papart’s Night Bird, a signed 1974 aquatint, dances with joy and grace, experimentation and lyricism. His bird looks as though it is floating rather than flying, something akin to the feeling of dreaming under a full moon.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nAnd Lorna Simpson’s Backdrops Circa 1940, a signed 1998 silkscreen, celebrates a distinctive adoration of the moon that has appeared many times in pop culture and its depictions— here as a set prop in a photography studio with a charming retro smile.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nAlexander Calder’s Works in Progress features the glorious sun in his unmistakable geometric way. As a common theme for Calder in many of his works both 3-D and 2-D, this one is particularly radiating.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nClaude Monet’s reenvisioning of the way painters portrayed the atmosphere is amongst his most notable fortes, and in Falaises A Pourville, Soleil Levant he does no less than justice to the mysterious ways that sunlight transforms a landscape.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nDan Christensen’s 1980 silkscreen Bright Skies Ahead appears giddy with glee, a voicing of a seaside scene that seems to incorporate the full ambiance of the wind and its fledgeling sailboats, the sky and its inhabitant clouds, and the warm beach complete with roaming plantlife— all of which are influenced by the resounding brilliance of the overhead sun.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nJoan Miró’s Litografia Original III, though an abstract work, is likely a reference to the sun, as Miró was often drawing on inspiration from nature to infuse within his work. It is the fair distribution, the right proportion, the stability between opposite elements. It must result from balance, a harmony. The distribution of the lines, masses, solids and voids of a composition must ensure that the overall arrangement of a work is coherent.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nThe GCA Gallery Paris, presents a group exhibition with 9 artists: Dotmasters, Dzia, Etnik, Greg Jager, Kurar, Malakkai, Momies, Mr June and Otto Schade.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nThese artists have studied the question of equilibrium/balance and have produced for this exhibition, works exclusively on paper.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nBalance is also a dynamic state, a subject in its own right. The rhythm or movement of the subject of a work sometimes leads the viewer to ask questions about the composition of the work as a whole. Etnik's pieces perfectly illustrate this idea with their floating geometric shapes whose energy starts from a central point and extends outwards.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nKurar traps our gaze by binding in the air, by simple fluorescent threads, heavy objects. For whom is the writing being done? In what circumstances?’ was firstly posed by Edward Said to form a debate on the politics of interpretation. Departing from these questions, the exhibition Who Writes? brings together artists from different regions whose works are charged with both political and poetic sensibilities in response to their own environments. Yet, in this multilingual encounter, dialogues between self and other, individual and collective, and memories and narratives manifest new, liberating horizons through their art.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nBased on Jorge Méndez Blake’s idea that ‘writing is itself a kind of construction and reading is a way of creation’, he transforms literature into architecture and performs the act of reading. His site-specfic piece I Took my Power in my Hand (and a Typewriter) is built around Emily Dickinson’s poem, sculpting a poetic voice into a manifesto – a fist to fight, a pencil to draw or a pen to write. Maria Taniguchi’s untitled paintings depicting patterns of bricks are dedicated to labor-intensive processes in the face of external global mechanization. Her Runaways – sculptural circles and rods made from Java Plum, a hardwood native to Southeast Asia – speaks to the recurring theme of entanglement between human workers and ‘earth stuff’. Michael Lin’s wall painting Forever Shanghai borrows from the Chinese bicycle brand founded in 1940. As the name suggests, the product was intended to last at least a lifetime. Lin’s piece illustrates a symbolic temporality where Maoist China’s national ideology of ‘a better life’ is projected by this product. Shilpa Gupta is drawn to how objects, places, and people are defined, and asks how these definitions are played out through the classification, restriction, and censorship. Untitled (There is No Border Here) is a pattern poem that shines a light on the abstract nature of territorial boundaries through both its content and form. Ariel Schlesinger’s art turns negative events into positive ones by reflecting on everyday beauty, on the poetry that we fail to see, and on our wavering attention. At Arm’s Length IV performs a sculpture’s freedom into a flaming dance to break the ordinariness. Adriana Lara playfully turns her artistic models into situations for the viewers to engage with. Driven by her ongoing research on noise, El Ambiente consists of painting, sculpture and sound, and utilizes the syntactical structures of sign systems and modes of visualizing quantitative data as its aesthetics.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nWritten from and for the rhetoric of emancipation, Who Writes? rethinks the everyday subversion through a questioning of what exists after artistic liberation. Turns out, even artists have hump days to hurdle too. And like us, their fantasies can be a little greedy and gun slinging. Look no further than pop art bandits, the Tinker Brothers and see what they manage to get away with in their latest exhibition, 'Dinner Is Served'. It’s as tasty as it sounds - featuring past work, as well as a new limited edition print series.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nYou’ll come face to face with an array of characters known for having vivid fantasy lives, multiple personas, and an amazing ability to court trouble, yet come out unscathed. Reimagined with sinister mirth by the Tinker Brothers, you’ll see recognisable pop icons pushed to the edge. Go all meta as you live vicariously through the Tinker Brothers, living vicariously through the anti-heroes of animation, living vicariously through their own alter egos, when you immerse in their work, including the three panel title piece, 'Dinner Is Served'.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nA darker look at the scrappier side of Snoopy, Felix the Cat and Mickey Mouse, each artwork comprising the 'Dinner Is Served' exhibition is grimacing with the bold, acerbic wit and mischief of the Tinker Brothers. Read: guns, raining dollar bills and shady deals - while wearing shades. Subverting pop culture characters and throwing them into gangsta-land scenarios, where they look downright laconic, is perverse work.
