Curated by gallery director Indira Cesarine, the exhibit will open on November 21st, 2019 and will be on view through December 14th, 2019. BODY BEAUTIFUL will feature artworks across a variety of mediums including painting, drawing, photography, video, and sculpture that highlight the power of the figure. Throughout the canon of art history the human figure has been a central theme, as we grapple with our own existence, feeding a desire to self-represent and to understand our place in the universe. This exhibition will present works by contemporary artists who address the figure not just as an object of beauty, or a subject of anatomy, but rather elaborate on body positive depictions of the human form, including all body types, ages, and genders, celebrating diversity as well as the timeless beauty of the body. The Untitled Space is honored to raise funds for Art4Equality through this exhibition, an initiative that supports the creation of empowering gender equality themed exhibitions and public art. <br />\r\n<br />\r\nWhat is Body Positivity? The body-positive movement, which dates back to early Victorian reforms against the corset, 1960s initiatives against fat-shaming, and more recently via social media with influencers challenging unrealistic standards of beauty, is “rooted in the belief that all human beings should have a positive body image, while challenging the ways in which society presents and views the physical body. The goal of the movement is to address unrealistic beauty standards and to build the confidence of oneself and others. The movement sets forth the notion that beauty is a construct of society, and poses that this construct should not infringe upon one's ability to feel confidence or self-worth. With the emergence of body activists of the last decade addressing the negative repercussions of fat shaming, including depression, eating disorders and body dysmorphia, we have seen a dramatic shift in consciousness with fatphobia slowly going by the wayside, along with the unhealthy societal demands for bodily perfection. Body activists have emphasized in particular fat shaming as a sickness in our cultural fabric. We now live in an era where body acceptance has finally become not only an important subject, but is taken seriously as central to the human experience. This dialogue has changed the lives of many women (and men) with marginalized bodies who didn’t fit into society’s definition of beauty or feel comfortable in their own skin. Ideals of feminine beauty in particular have historically been reserved for a select few who were blessed with privileged physiques. This beauty standard has evolved over the years from perfect hour-glass silhouettes achieved with corsets to the thin athletic figures and supermodels that dominated the 80s, waifs of the 90s and to yoga perfection of the 2000s. The “beautiful” people existed on their own pedestal, while the rest of humanity was overlooked. With beauty standards continuously transforming, what was once previously not accepted as “beautiful” has expanded into the current “body positive” narrative. But what does “body positive” really mean? Is it merely an emphasis on “fat acceptance” or is it truly as inclusive as the word suggest and the movement intends? The BODY BEAUTIFUL exhibition addresses this shift in our cultural experience, engaging viewers with artworks by a wide array of artists of all ages and genders, who address what the “Body Positive” movement means to them in 2019. As a curator I felt it was important to include works by artists of all genders and generations, as well as represent all body types in this narrative. To me “Body Positive” should be inclusive of all shapes and sizes, skin colors, perfections and imperfections – including “skinny” bodies, plus size figures, pregnant bodies, bodies with stretch marks, scarring, winkles, aging - and yes, beautiful bodies size 0 to size XXXXL. I am proud to raise funds through this exhibition for Art4Equality, a new initiative I have launched that supports the creation of empowering artwork and exhibitions that can impact social change, raise awareness and inspire our community.” - Indira Cesarine<br />\r\n<br />\r\nABOUT THE UNTITLED SPACE: The Untitled Space is an art gallery located in Tribeca, New York in a landmark building on Lispenard Street. Event is in Stephen Bulger Gallery Toronto with address 1356 Dundas Street East, Toronto, Canada.", "title": "Larry Towell | Vintage Prints", "content": "Public Reception: Saturday, November 16, 2-5pm<br />\r\nGuided Tour of the Exhibition with Larry Towell: Saturday, November 16, 3pm<br />\r\n<br />\r\nThe gallery is pleased to present, “Vintage Prints”, our ninth solo exhibition of work by the world-renowned Canadian photojournalist Larry Towell.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nThis survey exhibition highlights Larry Towell’s impressive 40-year career in photography and includes a selection of his earliest prints made of some of his best-known images, as well as previously unseen works. <br />\r\n<br />\r\nHis archive of vintage prints includes rare photographs from his student days at York University in Toronto, where some of the themes he continues to investigate were first explored. It also includes rare gelatin silver photographs made during his early trip to India, which were published together with his poems in the 1983 publication Burning Cadillacs; his first of 14 monographs. The photographs on display continue through his extensive projects from Central America in the 1980s, Mexican Mennonite migrant families in Canada and Mexico in the 1990s, New York during 9/11, Gaza and the West Bank from 1993 to 2004, and Afghanistan from 2008 to 2011. <br />\r\n<br />\r\nOver his career, a central interest connecting Towell’s projects has been photographing the day-to-day life of people living amidst extreme conditions. Often depicting people who are unable to own land, either by economic or political forces. Towell makes photographs that highlight unusual circumstances and a human being’s resolve and resilience. While his photographs have taken him to locations all around the globe, he has also turned his lens toward his own family, living on a seventy-five-acre sharecrop farm in Southwestern Ontario.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nThe photographs themselves are often the first example of prints from each series and include resin coated prints made for publication purpose, as well as fibre-based gelatin silver prints made for exhibition purpose. Although most of the prints are in pristine condition, some show evidence of their age and past use, emphasizing their artifactual nature. <br />\r\n<br />\r\nLarry Towell is the first Canadian born member of the prestigious Magnum Photos Agency, whose photographers bridge the divide between journalism and art, and between the objective statement and the personal point of view. Towell’s work is exhibited and collected around the world. He is the author of 14 books, most recently including the critically acclaimed Afghanistan (Aperture, 2014); and The World from My Front Porch (Archive of Modern Conflict / Bulger Gallery Press, 2008). Rubbernecker will be the artists second solo exhibition at Hashimoto Contemporary, in which she will be exhibiting her ongoing series of miniature violent, yet charming and wickedly clever dieoramas. <br />\r\n<br />\r\nInspired by the macabre, Abigail Goldman portrays seemingly everyday scenes - city blocks, suburban homes, a peek inside someone’s living room as they curl up on the couch with a book. Upon first glance, these charming and ordinary depictions of life disarm the viewer, drawing them in only to confront them with a shockingly violent reality of underground cannibalism, murderous tots and killer poodles. Inhabited by figures less than one inch tall, the dieoramas are meticulously detailed, creating small insular universes where chaos reigns. By presenting these violent scenes in such a small scale, the artist miniaturizes rage in a way that is both darkly humorous yet deeply troubling. <br />\r\n<br />\r\nMiniatures are often associated with the feminine. From early childhood, girls play with dollhouses, small dolls and their accessories, serving as a pre-cursor to the “women’s work” that lies ahead - tending to a home, family and instilling a deeply rooted sense of nurturing. By working in a small scale, and playing with the concept of “cute” the artist subverts and re-contextualizes what is a historically feminine form of self-expression. By doing so, Goldman confronts us with our own fascination with violence, our desire for it, what is considered appropriate and ultimately our desensitization as a whole. <br />\r\n<br />\r\nAbout the exhibition and her inspiration for this latest body of work, the artist states, <br />\r\n<br />\r\n“We are in violent times. We have accustomed ourselves to tragedy. I think there’s an undercurrent of anger that is rippling just under the surface - it builds and bubbles up in unexpected places; we find ourselves with clenched fists in line at the grocery store, or sobbing in the shower, or ready to ram the back of someone’s car when they stop short. By capturing tiny moments of violence and containing them, making them so small they’re charming, there’s a kind of catharsis. Gallows humor is a coping mechanism, black humor is a dialect of the world-weary; if I can make someone laugh, or make them see something of themselves or their own simmering frustrations in a dieorama, then I’ve succeeded.”<br />\r\n<br />\r\nPlease join us Saturday, December 14th from 6pm - 8pm for the opening reception of Rubbernecker.
