The artist returns to Spoke Art with a new collection of screen prints featuring her trademark animal characters paired with humorous text.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nBy utilizing animals as her main characters, Miller is able to transform narrative scenes from sensible to comically absurd. These animals - squirrels, frogs, monkeys - are thrown out of their natural elements and humanized within domestic scenarios. What was once commonplace and respectable becomes charmingly ludicrous. <br />\r\n<br />\r\nHer most notable character - the cat - lends itself to a particular absurdity and relatability. Miscreants in their own right, their stubborn autonomy and disregard for consequence resonate with her human audience; by using cats to explore the humor and accidental charm in everyday moments, Miller convincingly proposes to us all that mistakes are just a part of life. <br />\r\n<br />\r\nInspired by Victorian-era postcards and ephemera, the soft color palette and illustrative style of this new collection evoke nostalgia and familiarity. This gentle aesthetic is contrasted with comical narrative text, further humanizing her absurd animal characters. Drawing on humor as a participatory tool, these moral narratives serve to minimize the apparent gravity of self-inflicted human suffering. Tangle will be Cheung’s third solo exhibition at Hashimoto Contemporary, in which he utilizes a bold color palette and intertwining nude figures to explore themes of queerness, identity and intersectionality. <br />\r\n<br />\r\nFor his latest body of work, Cheung is continuing his exploration and celebration of themes of queer love and identity as well as body positive imagery. The figures represented in the artists work refuse to adhere to gender norms and expectations, re-examining and re-contextualizing normative notions of gender.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nMany of the works in Tangle were made during the artists time at the Bed Stuy Art Residency in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, NYC. While at the residency, Cheung focused primarily on oil pastels and drawings, exploring techniques of line making and abstraction. The figures represented in these work overlap and intertwine, creating organic shapes which tangle into one another. Contorted repetitive figures merge into fluid shapes, serving as a visual reminder that we are all one and create powerful messages of positivity and acceptance. The semi-abstracted, simplistically rendered figures are exuberant and playful, full of movement and life. By doing so, Cheung illustrates a positive and empowering representation of what it means to be connected as humans.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nPlease join us Saturday, September 7th from 6pm - 8pm for the opening reception of Tangle. Now retired from<br />\r\nentrepreneurship, Sanders has made a 180º turn to devote his entire life to the arts, his original passion.<br />\r\nAs a child, Sanders was introduced to the joys of painting by his father, and honed his craft for most of his<br />\r\nyouth and adolescence. Like many people in our society, Sanders eventually believed it was time to<br />\r\n“grow up.” He entered the business world after completing his education and embarked on a remarkably<br />\r\nsuccessful career as a multi-business entrepreneur. For thirty years, he never touched a paint brush or<br />\r\ncreated art of any kind, though he was endlessly drawn to exploring museums and watching documentary<br />\r\nfilms.<br />\r\n<br />\r\n2 of<br />\r\n<br />\r\nWhen he retired in 2015, Sanders became an avid art collector, filling his home with classic works as well<br />\r\nas supporting local and internationally renowned artists. Sensing the creative spirit that was behind his<br />\r\ninterests, a friend bought him a set of paint and paintbrushes and encouraged him to try his hand at art<br />\r\nagain. As soon as Sanders began painting, he was hooked, and hasn’t put down his brush since.<br />\r\n“I was really surprised when I started to paint again that I still had it—I thought creativity was something<br />\r\nyou only had when you were young,” says Sanders. “But for thirty years I went to museums and absorbed<br />\r\nso much art as a spectator, that when I started to paint again I found I had this huge reservoir of<br />\r\ninspiration that was sort of waiting for me to tap into it. It never went away. It was just in my brain, waiting<br />\r\nfor me to translate it to canvas.”<br />\r\nSince the start of 2017, Sanders has created hundreds of new paintings, drawing on influences from<br />\r\ngreats such as Basquiat, Dali, de Kooning, Picasso, and many more. In his explorations, he has created<br />\r\ndozens of figurative and landscape pieces—but his greatest passion has been for the abstract. In<br />\r\nAbstractions, Sanders will premiere 40 abstract works on canvas along 40 digital artworks, some<br />\r\nincorporating mixed media, and all created in an aesthetic flow specifically for this show. In addition to the<br />\r\nnew body of work, this is also Sanders’ debut as an artist.<br />\r\n“For me it’s been a very odd identity shift,” he says. “For thirty years being an adult and having a business<br />\r\npersona, and now changing it to something so dramatically different is strange to me.”<br />\r\nAbstractions will be on view for two days only, beginning Friday, September 27 and closing Saturday,<br />\r\nSeptember 28, 2019. All proceeds will be donated to the Sanders Family Foundation. Now retired from entrepreneurship, Sanders has made a 180 degree turn to devote his entire life to the arts, his original passion.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nAs a child, Sanders was introduced to the joys of painting by his father, and honed his craft for most of his youth and adolescence. Like many people in our society, Sanders eventually believed it was time to “grow up.” He entered the business world after completing his education and embarked on a remarkably successful career as a multi-business entrepreneur. For thirty years, he never touched a paint brush or created art of any kind, though he was endlessly drawn to exploring museums and watching documentary<br />\r\nfilms.<br />\r\n<br />\r\n<br />\r\nWhen he retired in 2015, Sanders became an avid art collector, filling his home with classic works as well as supporting local and internationally renowned artists. Sensing the creative spirit that was behind his interests, a friend bought him a set of paint and paintbrushes and encouraged him to try his hand at art again. As soon as Sanders began painting, he was hooked, and hasn’t put down his brush since. “I was really surprised when I started to paint again that I still had it—I thought creativity was something<br />\r\nyou only had when you were young,” says Sanders. “But for thirty years I went to museums and absorbed so much art as a spectator, that when I started to paint again I found I had this huge reservoir of inspiration that was sort of waiting for me to tap into it. It never went away. It was just in my brain, waiting for me to translate it to canvas.”<br />\r\n<br />\r\nSince the start of 2017, Sanders has created hundreds of new paintings, drawing on influences from greats such as Basquiat, Dali, de Kooning, Picasso, and many more. In his explorations, he has created dozens of figurative and landscape pieces—but his greatest passion has been for the abstract. In Abstractions, Sanders will premiere 40 abstract works on canvas along 40 digital artworks, some incorporating mixed media, and all created in an aesthetic flow specifically for this show. In addition to the new body of work, this is also Sanders’ debut as an artist. “For me it’s been a very odd identity shift,” he says. “For thirty years being an adult and having a business<br />\r\npersona, and now changing it to something so dramatically different is strange to me.” Abstractions will be on view for two days only, beginning Friday, September 27 and closing Saturday, September 28, 2019. Sometimes the works are unique prints, paintings, drawings or collages made in an edition of one, whether labeled as such or not. And sometimes this can be seen in a small edition of prints where a handmade element has been added across the edition, each final copy a numbered print and process-completed replica— though with a handmade flourish this results in a noteworthy new category of unique. As most know, the handmade is a sparkling qualifier, one that imbues any object with the magic of its creator most directly.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nChristo is an artist famous for presenting the natural world through a new lens, changing the way a familiar landscape or object is viewed and thus changing its perceived existence— the artist’s touch leading to an altered perspective. What better a fit than for a reproduced print of a concept drawing to have a hand-applied layer, one that brings some of the type of material used in the installation right into the edition itself. Mixed media work Wrapped Building Times Square does exactly that, a stone lithograph featuring a raised building made from cloth and string, signed, titled and numbered out of 200 in pencil by Christo.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nRobert Rauschenberg is known for his multidimensional-looking collages and montages which are rich with layers and variation in materials. Though usually flattened into the confines of a printed rectangle, this 1984 work Untitled is an editioned assembly created with various printing methods and hand-cut paper, the outcome being a tiered shape that breaks boundaries both physically and conceptually. This work also is signed, numbered and dated by Rauschenberg in an edition of 75.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nKerry James Marshall’s glorious large format etching Vignette (Wishing Well) is a feat of printmaking prowess, created with the help of the hands of a skilled group of printers in multiple stages— the final stage of which includes a bouquet of carefully cut and hand-applied hearts. Though not immediately apparent due to the print’s lush nuance throughout varying depths, these whispering applications adorn this work with love. Published by Paulson Fontaine Press in Berkeley, California, this work is also hand signed, titled, dated and numbered out of 50 in pencil by Marshall.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nIn The Sparkly Splendid Lippazanner at the Battle of Austerlitz artist Karen Kilimnik has amplified the desired effect with a wash of hand-applied glitter, such that this equine expression is actually shimmering. Kilimnik's paintings, characterized by loose brushwork and bold colors, are often pastiches of the Old Masters, part of a relatively new genre of painting termed the Iconic Portrait— not commissioned by its sitter but rather based on photographs, magazine cuttings, film clips and the like. Here, this icon’s regality is taken over the top with its glittery addition, driving the point home in magnificent fashion. The work is signed and numbered out of 200.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nAnd lastly, for an interesting piece that is what could be called a happy accident and something that printmakers often relish in behind the scenes, Willi's Wine Bar (Misprint) is a great example of an unintentional double-exposure-type image. Every year around harvest time, Willi’s Wine Bar in Paris has commissioned and published a special edition of contemporary posters to help promote artists and the enjoyment of wine drinking, with editions that date back to 1982. This poster from that inaugural year is a misprint, where text and faint traces of another poster appear under the intended art.
