Inspired by community and connections created around food, this dynamic group show brings together artists working in<br />\r\nceramics, drawing, painting and beyond for a delicious exploration in our relationships with food.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nFeaturing 28 artists from the San Francisco Bay Area, nationally and internationally, the show includes a diverse range of experiences culturally, emotionally and conceptually. Drawing inspiration from the community created around gathering for a meal and the preparation of food, each artist brings unique memories and histories embedded in what we eat. Each piece offers the viewer a personal perspective of food, ranging from favorite dishes and places, intimate domestic scenes, celebratory occasions and nostalgic recollections.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nArtists’ contributions to the eclectic Potluck include Katie Kimmel’s playful ceramic seafood platter appetizers, a variety of bejeweled beverages by Sam Keller, traditional dish ware painted with clay on canvas by Liz Hernandez, Anna Valdez’s summer beer series painted on ceramic slabs, a charcuterie board rendered in detailed spray paint stencils by Casey Gray, a corn offering by Hilda Palafox and a sweet and saucy milkshake by Petites Luxures.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nPlease join us for Potluck, opening June 29th with an evening reception from 6pm - 9pm where some of the artists will be in attendance. Taking a look at the existing colors, visible vignettes of nature, construction features and personality can all serve to inform the decor choices made moving forward, and working to compliment what is set in stone, so to speak, can have a great impact on the continuity and ultimate sense of harmony achieved.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nIf the natural surrounding environment is cool and calm and, as with perhaps a vacation rental, maintaining an air of nighttime romance is desired, using blues and greens and themes of the moon can work wonders. Wendy Chazin’s Interior, Still Life is a signed 1975 stone lithograph that promotes a homey feeling of peacefulness. Jim Buckels’s Bel Air Blues and Gerard Razzia’s Clandestine are dramatic and chic signed silkscreens that both lend dreaminess, austerity and mystery.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nThe windows allow for plants and landscape to come into the interior, which in turn become the first characters to dictate the mood. Choosing artwork that keeps up a conversation with the local flora residents can be an excellent vehicle to encourage the positive flow that they have created. P.S. Gordon’s Untitled has the right colors and themes, and Robert Zakanitch’s Avery Fisher Hall would easily blanket any wall with complimentary movement. And Bill Komoski’s Community Holiday Festival seems an easy pairing with what could be dancing sunlight dappling through leaves of trees or chandelier prisms.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nIf the space has interesting modern architectural details or design features, then playing off those angles and shapes can bring an affirming gesture, reinforcing the existing tone. Marko Spalatin’s Untitled looks already like mid-century modern geometry, and Mel Bochner’s Twenty-Five Years begs to be placed near a see-through open staircase. A vertically enlightened loft-style space could require an equally as visionary piece of artwork, as is the case with one like Budget Enterprise by Olga Koumoundouros. And Notre Dame, Montreal by Roger Cartier could pick up on both classic renaissance moulding and a spirit of romantic tradition.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nTo accentuate an ambiance of warmth and sunset glamour, choosing pieces with warm colors and summery themes fits the bill. Roland Ricardson’s Interior View holds all the perfect undertones and Rolf Rafflewski’s Hotel de Ville is reminiscent of twenties nostalgia of travel and fine weather bliss. Even if the weather is always changing, Howard Hodgkin’s The Sky's The Limit offers an abstract sunset that fosters a mood of cocktails by the sea no matter what time of year, and the desired warmth can make its home within yours.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nAnd if waltzing with floor or wall tiles, textures or patterns strikes a fancy, then selecting art that employs those details can be a winning pairing. Tin Roof (2nd State) by James Rosenquist would make a thrilling companion to old fashioned malt shop tiling, and Katherine Porter’s Untitled (Newport Jazz Festival) would converse readily with exposed brick walls, whether inside or outside.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nTerry Winters’s Location Plan 2000 indulges an affinity toward all of what makes eye candy of natural wood and marble patterning. Other Avatar will be Zupa’s third solo exhibition with the gallery, and his inaugural solo exhibition at Hashimoto Contemporary’s New York City location. The exhibition features mixed media works on wood, sculpture and a large scale installation. Highlighting his multifaceted studio practice, the artist draws from a variety of sources for inspiration such as technology, mythology, and both Eastern and Western religion, creating a new and unique universe filled with religious and historic figures as well as anthropomorphic creatures. <br />\r\n<br />\r\nBy definition, the word ‘avatar’ comes from Hindu mythology, and represents a manifestation of a deity or soul released from their bodily form on earth. In today’s digital age, the word has taken on an entirely new and ubiquitous meaning, defining a graphic image which represents a person on the Internet. In today’s rapidly changing world, we are gods of our own universe, with multiple incarnations of ourselves in various abstract dimensions.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nFor Other Avatar, Zupa melds the symbolism and meaning of mythologies into the current context of today’s world. The artist views the modern day interpretation of the term ‘avatar’ as an example of the universality and lateral connectedness which he feels deeply inspired by. Zupa’s richly symbolic work is a representation of these themes.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nAs part of the ongoing Mightier Than series, Zupa will exhibit four new deconstructed antique typewriters, which are reassembled into assault weapon sculptures, bringing new meaning to the old adage ‘the pen is mightier than the sword.’ Additionally, the artist has created a series of 13 ‘birdpot’ sculptures, a recurring hybrid creature in Zupa’s work which has a pot-like vessel shaped body with a bird face. These mixed media creatures will be part of a life-size sculptural installation, surrounding an elaborately dressed Samurai riding on horseback, wielding an assembled typewriter rifle, which was most recently exhibited at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art. <br />\r\n<br />\r\nPlease join us Saturday, June 29th from 6pm - 8pm for the opening reception of Other Avatar. Although in her over four decades of pioneering visual creation she has broken ground in method, style, media and even subject— inhabiting a space in the art world that could be considered its own genre— her concepts fall into a neverending category that forges active questioning about the society we live in, and furthermore what the possible answers to those questions reveal about a place for humanness in an overly critical culture. She is notable in the art world and in the American legacy for being a black woman, though her important work strikes a sonorous chord rich with universal messages of beauty, honesty and a subtle wry wit which blossoms into undeniable charm.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nAmongst countless materials innovations, a repeating theme for Simpson involves silkscreen printing her now recognizable photographic imagery with text onto felt panels, infusing her artworks with an indescribable depth. Experiencing a Lorna Simpson work in this way unveils the layers slowly— first the photograph and the subject shift into view, then follow the text and the concept, and finally a region of information that translates wordlessly through the tactility of the silkscreen ink and the fabric— leaving a trail of enigmatic mystery with which to waltz.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nThe result is a world that is both sensual and intellectual, full of swift imagination and leisurely cool. And in a tumultuous and continually evolving climate of politics and history, the indelibly inspired ambiance Simpson crafts in whichever medium she is working revives a spirit of hope and progress that are continually available to us.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nA work like Backdrops Circa 1940 is on first impression dreamy and nostalgic, glowing with an enchanting retro charisma that only gains in momentum when you read the almost perfunctory text describing the scenes. Carving a space for someone to be seen by the simple act of mechanical description more than simply comments on the pervading issues of race in America, it directly surmounts the problem with a brilliant rewrite that is immediately effective. Simpson’s mastery and adeptness are perhaps what have carried her works into the spotlight again and again, an intrinsic measure of grace and attitude that work hand in hand. The figures in this diptych are of an unidentified black woman and of a fragment of Lena Horne, American singer, dancer, actress and civil rights activist born in 1917 in Brooklyn, whose career spanned over 70 years appearing in film, television and theater and brought her from the chorus of New York’s infamous Cotton Club alongside the likes of Duke Ellington at the age of 16 through becoming a nightclub performer and moving to Hollywood. This work exhibited at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2000 and is in the permanent collection.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nAnd Recall is based on a still from her 16 mm 1998 film titled ‘Recollection’ shot during Simpson's artist residency at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. The film questions what is real versus that which is fabricated, and how memory is selective. Out of context of the film this piece loses none of its strength, somehow molding its own novel drama. Simpson’s work often presents a fragmented or open-ended story, which the viewer can complete based on their own personal narratives. Black and white photography can be bold and quiet at the same time, the high contrast creating structure and foundation while the artistry and the gradations of light are allowed to shine with layers of complementary mood. It can be a staple of any design repertoire, and a secret ingredient in a space full of much more dramatic or colorful design choices — and it can be especially effective neighboring an arsenal of plants.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nCityscapes and architecture are an easy fit as they provide depth, something useful in making any size space more magnificent. Famous places can furthermore be rich with cultural nostalgia and steeped in historic significance, such as The Forum, Rome from Karsten Thormaehlen, Brandenburg Gate, Berlin from Jurgen Held, The Chrysler Building, New York from Christopher Bliss or London Bridge, London from R Von Gotz.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nHigh fashion prints never fail to contribute waves of beauty, as the photographer’s eye, the model’s forms, the fashion designer’s vision and even the quality of printing all have an influence on the magic infused in the final expression. When all is working in concert the works become striking images, near impossible to tear the eyes away from, such as Orcel, Paris (1954) from Henry Clarke, Chapeau + 5 Roses, Paris (1956) from William Klein, Nusch Eluard et Sonia Mosse from Man Ray and Lady Balancing Branch from Bruce Weber.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nPhotography of art can be in a way a form of art photography, blurring the lines between genres and enriching the atmosphere in which they lounge. Richard Serra’s Blindspot is a simultaneous enjoyment of Serra’s sculpture, the surrounding natural lighting and the beautiful architecture of the building. Man Ray’s African Mask is one of his most famous images, with many layers of elegance softly evident. And Desire, Paris (1982) by Paolo Gasparini seems an enchanting tour of the aesthetic of film negatives, advertising and street photography— being an artistic statement and also an edgy and compelling visual in and of itself.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nPatterns and shapes create wonderful lines that can either continue or juxtapose a structural theme already in place, and photography that plays with representational objects in a subtly abstract way adds depth without sacrificing the universality of the undefined.
