As a free and rebellious spirit, she struggled to be recognized in London in the swinging Sixties and railed against the prevailing sexism of those years. Boty developed her own deeply personal, feminist-inspired Pop style. Her early paintings were both sensual and erotic, celebrating female sexuality from a woman’s point of view. Later she incorporated celebrities into her works declaring “people need them, and the myths that surround them, because their own lives are enriched by them. Pop Art colours those myths.”<br />\r\n<br />\r\nNiyaz Najafov, a former soldier in the Azerbaijan army, channels his existential anguish into art. Najafov believes he was born an artist and his life has been about making sense of the world around him through the eyes of an artist. As a self-taught painter, Najafov creates magnetic and often tortured figures presenting imaginary characters that disturb and tickle in equal measure. He records everyday scenes with a profound intensity, capturing his struggle with reconciling the distressing and humorous parts to the human condition. Compared to Francis Bacon by the Huffington Post, his art has been described as ‘raw, crude and sophisticated at the same time’ and Najafov leads the new generation of Azeri artists who have sprung up following the collapse of the Soviet Union. <br />\r\n<br />\r\nMarkus Martinovitch is a twelve-year-old Russian-German boy with autism who produces extraordinary works. His condition requires heavy medication causing severe side effects such as tremors. He is often unable to paint and suffers prolonged episodes of hallucination. These harmful experiences are transformed through his art to bright and bold exclamations about life itself. During one of his hallucinations, he emerged with a series of works presenting the notion that the world itself might just be an illusion. In his own words, ‘colour does not exist – it is just a reflexion of the light.’ Despite his young age, Martinovitch brings a remarkably mature and considered approach to his works and is unafraid to tackle complex themes regarding inner and outer spaces and the often-strange relationship between existence and meaning.<br />\r\n<br />\r\n“Silver Lining is about the enduring way art transforms both (Pablo Neruda)<br />\r\n<br />\r\nAbout the Exhibition:<br />\r\nMirus Gallery has invited several artists to participate in “Aletheia” a group exhibition titled after “a Greek word variously translated as \\\"unclosedness\\\", \\\"unconcealedness\\\", \\\"disclosure\\\" or \\\"truth\\\". The literal meaning of the word ?–<br />\r\n?????? is \\\"the state of not being hidden; the state of being evident.\\\" It also means factuality or reality.” When confronted with the roster of exhibiting artists you can relate the level of realism in each of their work. Yet you will have to dig deeper when viewing and establish an understanding of this new unconcealedness.<br />\r\n“Aletheia” opens the conversation about truth through the idea of representation and realism. In our new age of abstract art and postmodern conceptualism artists that work with realist work has taken a back<br />\r\nseat to these emerging art forms. With this exhibition we take a deeper look into emerging realist painters in a postmodern landscape of theory and critical discussion. Arolsen, Germany, 1861; d. Oakville, Canada, 1943) and Violet Keene Perinchief (b. Bath, UK, 1893; d. Oakville, Canada, 1987).<br />\r\n<br />\r\nThis exhibition brings together two generations of work by famed photographers from the early 20th Century. A mother and daughter who each operated commercial photography studios and excelled in the art of photography while exhibiting their award-winning photographic prints in international salon exhibitions. Their work was last presented together in the group exhibition “REDISCOVERY, Canadian Women Photographers 1841-1941”, curated by Laura Jones. This exhibition opened at London Regional Art Gallery on May 13, 1983 and was also presented in four additional galleries including the Art Gallery of Ontario in 1984. <br />\r\n<br />\r\nThis exhibition highlights examples of the different methods of their photographic practice which spans from the 1890s through the 1940s. Minna Keene, née Bergman, lived in Britain, South Africa, and Canada. She emigrated to the United Kingdom between 1870-1880 and married Caleb Keene, a noted painter and decorator. Minna was a member of the London Salon of Photography and in 1908 was the first woman to be admitted as a Fellow to the Royal Photographic Society. She was also asked to join the Linked Ring in the final year of that illustrious circle. <br />\r\n<br />\r\nMinna’s first photographic work was of plant life, for which she made exposures during different stages of growth. Later, she made a successful series of ornithological photographs that illustrated English textbooks which remained in use over several decades. In 1903 Minna emigrated to Cape Town, South Africa, and made studies of Boer life while operating an active photography studio and raising two children. She exhibited her photographs of Boer life at the Lyceum Club, London, in April 1907. In 1910 she exhibited in the Fifty-fifth Annual Exhibition of the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain, and again each year until 1929. In 1911 Minna’s photograph of her daughter Violet entitled Pomegranates, was awarded Picture of the Year at the London Photographic Salon. <br />\r\n<br />\r\nIn late 1913 the Keene family moved to Canada, first settling in Montréal, and then in Toronto. Minna was practising as a professional photographic portraitist and was commissioned by the Canadian Pacific Railway to photograph the Rockies in 1914 and 1915. In 1920 she opened a studio in Toronto and then relocated to Oakville in 1922. <br />\r\n<br />\r\nIn 1926, Minna was featured in a Maclean’s magazine article that mentions the highlights of her career and enthuses about her being a “Home lover!”. In the 1930s Minna continued to exhibit internationally and was assisted in the studio by her daughter, Violet, who eventually succeeded her, and became a photographer in demand and Manager at the Eaton’s photography studio in Toronto on College Street from 1933-1948. The exhibition features an international roster of artists who push the boundaries of the medium both inside and outside the studio. <br />\r\n<br />\r\nEelus is a UK based mural artist and screen printer. An early member of the street-art bastion Pictures on Walls, Eelus is a contemporary of Banksy, Shepard Fairey Hush, and many more working in stencils. <br />\r\n<br />\r\nJana & JS are an Austro-French duo whose work merge their shared passion for photography and urban environments. Inspired by the city, its architecture and inhabitants, their work focuses on urban landscapes, portraits and details of architecture.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nJoe Iurato is a multidisciplinary artist whose works are built on a foundation of stencils and aerosol. Falling somewhere in between simplistic and photorealistic, his multi-layer stencils offer a distinctly clean and illustrative aesthetic. <br />\r\n<br />\r\nMando Marie is known for her graphic work, which uses images of tales and repetition of motifs to inform the compositions of her paintings. Her works play with elements of both the spooky and nostalgia. <br />\r\n<br />\r\nOakOak is an anonymous artist who transforms everyday objects, utilizing them for his cleverly placed imagery, creating works that are a combination of humor and urban poetry.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nPenny finds inspiration in everyday objects and often overlooked ephemera but currency is the most prominent recurring theme in his work. He has received global critical acclaim for his hand cut, extremely detailed stencil work. <br />\r\n<br />\r\nPlease join us Saturday, April 6th from 6pm - 8pm for the opening reception of Spotlight: Stencil. Some of the artists will be in attendance. This exhibition will be on view through Saturday, April 27th.
