But most of us are not Fred Stichnoth. <br />\r\n<br />\r\nThe German-born master of images relinquished life as a celebrity and fashion photographer in the late nineties, where he was poised for popularity, in order to decamp to the East Indies and collect shells. It’s a move that has yielded a distinctive body of work. Fred’s portraiture bears the hallmarks of his haute couture pedigree, applied to natural and exotic subjects.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nAddicted Art Gallery is proud to present “Paradise Found”, a pop-up photography exhibition featuring works by the talented Fred Stichnoth.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nThis exhibition is proudly sponsored by New Zealand Unlimited, purveyor of hand crafted and fine New Zealand Wines.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nA little bit about Fred…<br />\r\n<br />\r\nGerman-born Fred Stichnoth entered the world of professional photography in 1987, when he was hired as an assistant to the famous German photographer Walter Schels.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nThe 1990's saw Fred enjoying success as a portrait photographer, photographing the likes of director Wim Wenders; Thaddeus Ropac in his Austrian castle for Vogue; an exuberant Chrissie Hynde from The Pretenders for EMI Records; Pink Floyd in Berlin; and numerous album covers for many artists and bands.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nDuring the mid-nineties, Fred became enamoured with fashion photography. His photos were used in high fashion editorials for magazines and catalogues for a plethora of brands.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nStichnoth’s portraiture studies the beauty of women and ethnic culture using a unique combination borne out of necessity and unconscious influence. He employs an old fashioned technique whereby a backdrop is used to separate the subject from their surroundings. This juxtaposition is striking when the subject is so obviously separated from their natural environment. He also uses motifs and poses that echo the stylised productions in fashion magazines. Amongst Friends will be the artists inaugural solo exhibition at Hashimoto Contemporary, in which they explore the wide range of interactions which can be found within various types of group dynamics and pairs. From a Beavis and Butthead samurai battle to nymph like figures scooting along towards an unknown adventure, the works in Amongst Friends explores these themes while staying true to the artists’ signature styles and fantastical universes their figures inhabit. <br />\r\n<br />\r\nWith established independent practices of their own, Kelly Tunstall and Ferris Plock have been working collaboratively for over ten years. For Amongst Friends, the artists will be exhibiting over 20 new works, with a mix of collaborative and solo works by both artists. The exhibition explores painting as a conduit for exploring identity, connection and language.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nFor his third solo exhibition with the gallery, Wentz continues to refine the delicate balance of his process driven portraiture. Through abstraction and emotive mark making, the artist has captured and distilled the mood of a person, place or moment. The portrait is used not as a document, but a more intimate expression of the artist and sitter allowing rendering and “visual fact” to become secondary to the more visceral quality of each brush stroke and the act of painting. <br />\r\n<br />\r\nSimilarly to his painting, Wentz’s mixed media works uncover and reveal layers of different languages, images, texture, typography and experiences.
