And its transition to a moment in the \r\nfuture depends on how the play moves on now. The spaces created in the framework of time are only in a state of impermanence and in this impermanence there exists an expanse for the imagination to create and restore the shape of the time.\r\nAmit Pasricha´s enthusiasm to record this impermanence is not only connected to his passion for the frame; the explicit illustrations of increasingly close relationship between documentation, investigation and aesthetics of space, inseperable in reality are his conscious artistic approaches applied to capture the images in their authenticity. On wooden bridges and forgotten villages, the chant of an ancient sacred rhythm plays on.\r\nInteresting to observe in his work is the space between the subject and the viewer where the drama of life unfolds itself. Be it a silent landscape, the afternoon sunlight in the house in Kashmir or a palatial home in Bengal, there seems to be an acceptance of the other in the framework of their intimate surroundings. As a panoramist, he takes in all accessible details into his frames so that the viewer is drawn into the lives of the portraits, arriving at an envisaged understanding of their relationships with their space and each other. Direct and keen observation is the expression that aptly describes his methodological approach to his works. It also expresses his intention to produce representations that are realistic and free of preconceived ideas. In the juxtaposition of series of photographs, he observes the possibility of drawing attention to the physiognomies and postures that are typical of different groups, genders and generations as well as to the individuality of their members.\r\n\r\nThe exhibition in its temporary framework opens the viewer an opportunity to gather \r\nintricate details moving from image to image, as many necessary to tell a story ever after.\r\n\r\nBorn in a family of photographers, Amit always had a keen eye and his love for the \r\npanorama and later attended Maine Photographic workshops and studied with Bill Allard, Jody Cobb, Steve McCurry, Mary Ellen. As India‘s foremost panoramic photographer, he is well known for his architectural and social documentary work and has been exhibited in India, Berlin, London and New York. He is winner of the Indian Tourism Award 2008. His Book Spiritual India won the German silver prize in 2014. It is the second collaboration between the artist and Spotte Art platform. The collection is available for purchase online from July 20th, 2018.\r\n\r\nThe show presents 12 biomorphic sculptures and botanical monoprint collages in a range of sizes. \r\n\r\nMassey's practice is concerned with the manifestations of nature and the systemic organization of clade-like free-form organismal objects created from common, everyday materials. In her practice, Christina speculates on a future of Anthropocene, shining the light on the possible man-made impact onto the biological forms. The preservation of our environment and appreciation for nature reveals itself through her choice of materials and form. Each work asks the viewer to stretch their imagination and invites their curiosity in a struggle to identify their marks, engaging in the creative process through the act of exploration of the Art.\r\n\r\nChristina Massey’s work has exhibited extensively in over a dozen solo exhibitions including with the Noyes Art Museum, Rush Arts Galleries, Brown University and abroad in cities such as London, Toronto, and Tokyo. She has won multiple awards for her work including most recently the SIP Fellowship at the EFA Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop, Puffin Foundation Grant, Mayer Foundation Grant and Merit Scholarship at Urban Glass. Massey’s work can be found in multiple private and public collections including the Janet Turner Museum and Credit Suisse. She currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.\r\n\r\n\r\nFor press inquiries or to request images:\r\n\r\nNelba Delmedico | info@spotteart.com or nelba@spotteart.com | (646) 657-0167 \r\n\r\nVisit us Event is in Stephen Bulger Gallery Toronto with address 1356 Dundas Street West, M6J 1Y2.", "title": "Land Use: A Group Exhibition", "content": "Stephen Bulger Gallery is pleased to present “Land Use”, a group exhibition of work by artists Robert Burley, Dana Fritz, Geoffrey James, and Jamey Stillings.\r\n\r\nMuch of human activity is spent either glorifying or mastering our natural surroundings. Whether nurturing a garden into harmony with a built environment, or finding a natural oasis within a large city, people’s interaction with nature is constantly evolving. This exhibition combines the work of four artists whose projects each explore a particular connection with nature.\r\n\r\nGeoffrey James has spent five decades surveying the natural and urban landscape, and in the 1970s was renowned for his series of black and white photographs of European gardens, made using a rudimentary panorama camera and presented as contact prints. Since that time, James has utilized a variety of cameras to capture human activity in the landscape. A selections of his work from three separate series are shown opposite selections of Robert Burley’s colour photographs taken from his thorough study of Toronto’s expansive park system. The verdant scenes of James’ and Burley’s photographs are in stark contrast to those of Jamey Stillings and Dana Fritz, whose projects both explore innovative scientific projects in the desert regions of the American Southwest. Stillings’ finely detailed black and white photographs are from his series “The Evolution of Ivanpah Solar”, which are fascinating images of a colossal project developed across a parcel of land too barren for much else. Fritz’s series “Terraria Gigantica” explores the artificial biomes used for entertainment, as science centres, and whose existence can be seen to herald the third stage of the Anthropocene.\r\n\r\nRobert Burley has sought to describe and interpret the built environment in which he lives. His work often explores the transition between city and country through projects such as “ORD: O’Hare Airfield”, “Viewing Olmsted”, “Great Lakes” and “An Enduring Wilderness.” He has also photographed urban spaces and structures through commissioned and self-directed projects that include: “Disappearance of Darkness”, “The New Suburb”, “Instruments of Faith”, “House/Home”, and “The Places of Glenn Gould”.\r\n\r\nDana Fritz investigates the ways we shape and represent the natural world in cultivated and constructed landscapes. She is a Professor in the School of Art, Art History & Design at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Fritz’s work has been exhibited in over 60 venues in the last decade and is included in collections around the world.\r\n\r\n\r\nGeoffrey James was born in Wales in 1942, read Modern History at Wadham College, completed his BA and MA at Oxford and emigrated to Canada in 1966. A self-taught photographer, he is the author or subject of more than a dozen books and monographs and is represented in major collections internationally. This is her first solo exhibition with the gallery. In 20 new black and white paintings, Byland explores the dance of influence that the past has on shaping the present, and the present has on reframing our memories.\r\n\r\nWorking with acrylic and airbrush on canvas, Byland’s paintings are steeped in the aesthetics of film noir, vintage photography, graphic novels and even super-heroes, with many of her characters shrouded in an aura of secrecy or actual disguise. All of her works have in some ways melded elements of traditional and contemporary art into works that are both classical and subcultural. With In the Presence of the Past, she’s exploring the way our society’s pre-occupation with nostalgia is coloring (or in the case of her work, grayscaling) our perceptions of the present.\r\n\r\n“In my paintings I want to create moments that elude time and space, in which history and the present day are blended together,” says Byland. “We are always in the presence of the past. It always accompanies or surrounds us as a fluid dimension that flows into our present and mixes up our future. And while our memories affect our present choices and further alter the future, the past stays a place that we can’t return to. The past only exists in a selective, staged form, altered by memory.” \r\n\r\nAs we recreate old narratives, visuals and media in the present, these new works are altered and colored by the elements of what we’re currently experiencing, with symbols and aesthetics taking on a new life even as they can clearly hail from a long-gone era. “I combine elements that fit with the underlying atmosphere of the image I’m creating. I don’t deliberately choose symbols to convey a specific message, that part is up to the viewer,” explains Byland. “What I love about symbolism is that it can carry a story by speaking to deeper levels of perception and emotion, like dreams or fairy tales do. An image can be read in a variety of ways and I don't want to limit this spectrum of interpretation by applying specific meaning. Just like a good story, for me, a good painting needs an atmosphere that draws you in and defines the genre in which the narrative is taking place. I want to create a certain suspenseful, dreamlike and tense atmosphere in my paintings. In addition to a carefully crafted formal framework, drama and mise-en scène play a role as well.”\r\n\r\nFor the first time ever, Byland will be exhibiting a partially animated painting, complete with sound.\r\n\r\nThe opening reception for Zoé Byland’s In the Presence of the Past will be hosted Saturday, July 28 from 7pm - 11pm in Gallery Two. The reception is open to the public and the exhibit will be on view through September 1. The space is open Tuesday - Saturday, 12pm - 6pm. Corey Helford Gallery is located at 571 S. This is Becket-Griffith’s second solo show with Corey Helford. Two years in the making, Magical Thinking will premiere twenty new acrylic paintings and over a dozen small-scale studies, as well as the debut of her first-ever large-scale sculptural installation.\r\n\r\n“I love the term ‘Magical Thinking,’” says Becket-Griffith. “It has the unapologetically optimistic feel of being a euphemistic term for ‘positive vibes,’ but it is also technically a psychological disorder indicating the inappropriately fallacious attribution of cause and effect between actions and events, with sometimes sinister implications. Being a painter, a (very) amateur philosopher, and a dilettante in various scientific and mathematical fields, I find myself gravitating towards the idea of Magical Thinking, Sympathetic Magic, and my own rampant OCD when it comes to finding signs and symbols in everyday life that strike a chord in my subconscious. Whether it's the unexpected juxtaposition between patterns and designs, words and colours, meanings and abstractions—I find myself combining permutations of symbolic images with things I find aesthetically pleasing and cerebrally interesting and this collection of paintings displays the results graphically.”\r\n\r\nMagical Thinking will explore Becket-Griffith’s fantastical world in a way she has not done before, with each work revealing meticulously crafted juxtapositions between the expressions, moods, and patterns of the ethereal, big-eyed fairies, familiars, dragonlings, mermaids and more that inhabit each portrait. The show will be comprised of works ranging from 8” x 10” to large-scale 36” x 48.” One of her most famous characters, a mermaid named “Porcelina” with a Blue Willow porcelain patterned tail, will be recreated as a 72” sculptural installation in collaboration with a New Orleans-based prop studio. This will be Becket-Griffith’s first time creating a sculptural piece of this scale. \r\n\r\nBrand new, never-before-released Strangeling Pins will also be given away on a first-come, first-serve basis at the opening reception. \r\n\r\nJasmine Becket-Griffith’s Magical Thinking will open Saturday, July 28 from 7pm - 11pm in the Main Gallery. Event is in COREY HELFORD GALLERY with address 571 S. Anderson St., Los Angeles, 90033.", "title": "THE NEW ROMANTICS | Group Show | Curated by Caro Buermann", "content": "On Saturday, July 28, Corey Helford Gallery will premiere new works by over 30 artists in The New Romantics group show, curated by Caro Buermann. The New Romantics surveys this moment’s neo-romantic yearnings for paradise, magic and transcendence above the climate of political, environmental and social turmoil. The opening reception will be held July 28 from 7pm to 11pm.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n“I’ve been living with this exhibition for nearly a year, but I’ve been living with the questions a lot longer,” says curator Caro Buermann. “There are many shows that celebrate beautiful imagery, but there aren’t many shows that tackle the implications of neo-romance and our growing attraction to the paradisiacal, the beautiful, and the magic that these images inspire. In today’s world, we are instantaneously exposed to a flood of bad news and images of terror which makes people long for safe places and redemptive perspectives.”\r\n\r\nThe Neo-Romanticism movement, which inspired The New Romantics, is not a new concept. Just as Early Romantic masters’ work was characterized by its emphasis on emotion and individualism, as well as glorification of all the past and nature, this new generation of romantics reflect on the current state of their world. “They are artists who are sensitive to the current state of things and reinterpret the world through their figures, characters, or landscapes,” says Caro. “Not necessarily as it objectively exists, but rather as they are seeing and feeling it.”\r\n\r\nThe group show will feature over 30 artists, including Adrian Cox, Akiko Ijichi, Alessandra Maria, Annie Stegg Gerard, Bao Pham, Camilla d'Errico, Carrie Pearce, Dilka Bear, Erika Sanada, Hannah Yata, Happy D, Hirabayashi Takahiro, Iva Troj, Jana Brike, Joanne Nam, Junko Mizuno, Kate Zambrano, kelogsloops, Lu Cong, Mandy Cao, Marie Larkin, Meredith Marsone, Miho Hirano, Naoto Hattori, Nathália Suellen, Pruch Sintunava, Relm, Sarah Dolby, Shang Chengxiang, Shiori Matsumoto, Yuka Sakuma and Yumiko Kayukawa. The artists will be debuting brand new pieces specifically created for The New Romantics.\r\n\r\n\"[My painting in this show] continues the mythic narrative of the Border Creatures, a race of hybrid beings that live in symbiotic harmony with the natural world,” explains Adrian Cox. “In this work, I depicted Healer wearing the Fatherdress, a supernatural garment that helped her to become both mother and father to her people, and to save them from the threat of the Specters. As she rests, Glow Gardener, another Border Creature, serenades her with music. Glow Gardener is shown wearing a Spectral Disguise, a robe that allows the wearer to pass amongst the Specters unrecognized. I wanted this painting to capture a sense of calm and peace, hinting at a return to balance and tranquility in the Borderlands. Even so, Glow Gardener's disguise suggests that the conflict between the Specters and the Border Creatures is not entirely over.\"\r\n\r\n“'Chaos and I' is a depiction of the intensity that chaos brings into our lives and our fixation with it,” says Relm of her new piece. “It's an energy that is extremely intriguing but once you surround yourself with it, it creates nothing but negativity. The look on her face is full of emotions we all have felt: restlessness, sadness, withdrawal and fear. The beauty that surrounds her in the form of gray rose skies , pedals and even her home is slowly being obliterated by the windstorm she is creating. The stormy tornadoes around her head create these suctions of destruction, a place that is all too familiar for her and very difficult to obstruct. I expect more as we near the deadline.”\r\n\r\nPruch SintunavaI says of his inspiration for the new work, “I see beauty in the way we grow trust to someone. How we accept the bond and all its disadvantages. The way we feel and understand their joy and suffer, sharing both pain and happiness. A rare feeling we don’t get to see very often. To be able to feel a warm present of one another, holding hands. Keeping each other against the destruction of this chaotic world. This one little feeling, like two tiny sparkles dive into sea of muddy water, is one of the only few things that still can make human beautiful.”\r\n\r\n“My goddess archetype, a universal, rather than an individual figure draws attention to the powerful, timeless and enduring quality that women possess as a creative and nurturing force,” explains Marie Larkin. “Society has become increasingly anxious as we become more and more aware of how fragile the balance of our world is in terms of occurrences such as global climate change, the extinction of species and the threat of terrorist and nuclear attack. My warrior women hold the power of hope and renewal in the wake of these fears.”\r\n\r\nThe New Romantics will open Saturday, July 28 from 7pm - 11pm in Gallery Three. The reception is open to the public and the exhibit will be on view through September 1. The space is open Tuesday - Saturday, 12pm - 6pm. Corey Helford Gallery is located at 571 S. Held on a quarterly basis, the shortlist is handed over to an invited selection committee who then decides on the winner. Through this initiative, the gallery is committed to bringing recent graduates to a wider audience.\r\n\r\nExhibiting artists, all who have been previous Window Project winners, include Jinyong Park, Luca Serasini, Jonny Tanna, Rosie McGinn, Tom Pope, Wright & Vandame, Anna Beatriz Fernandes, Ulla Nolden, Alexander Duncan, Holly Stevenson, and Julia Vogl.\r\n\r\nJinyong Park was the winner of Gazelli’s Spring 2018 Window Project with her work, Our Universes Meet Through the Word-holes. She graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2015 and has been exhibiting internationally in Paris, London and Seoul. Her two works for this exhibition, CHOROK and SNAPS, are acrylic works on paper that are captivating, colorful and geometric in style.\r\n\r\nLuca Serasini was the Winter 2017 Window Project winner with his work, The Káos of Cosmos, where he brought the viewer back to the first moments of the inception of the Universe. Since then, his practice has been concerned with, on one side, the development of the Universe after the Big Bang and, on the other side, the use of new materials and the light. In this exhibition, Serasini will be exhibiting works on paper that aim to describe the creation of the universe and light as a guiding source of energy.\r\n\r\nJonny Tanna’s work for the Window Project in 2017, entitled White People Are Scary #2, sought to reverse the indoctrinated fear of the ‘dark’ outsider looking in. Desensitised by the media whilst simultaneously fearing the invisible hand of capitalism that feeds it, we fear people looking in from the darkness, through our own windows. The idea of looking in has inspired Tanna for his work exhibited in this show which includes an interactive computer screen with an animated character called ‘Smarterchild’ accompanied by a small novel. The notion that most of our time is spent looking at small screens (either computers, televisions or phones) is juxtaposed by the fact that we still commute through analog platforms and life itself is always going to be analogue (food, love, friendships etc).\r\n\r\nRosie McGin was the Spring 2017 Window Project winner with her work, WSM or ‘Worlds Strongest Men’. Stills from this strong man competition have been enlarged to the point of pixilation and was printed onto vinyl fitted to the size of the first floor windows. Her current works for this exhibition continue to explore this idea as she displays two screens with the ‘World’s Strongest Men’ images. This illuminates to the viewer an obsessive mentality in the context of body image, masculinity and addition as well as evoking an undeniable sense of humour and excitement in the repetition of the chosen imagery.\r\n\r\nTom Pope was the winner of the Winter 2016 Window Project where he exhibited Light Traps, a site-specific installation using a brush inserted into a tin of cyanotype solution connected by a wire door elsewhere in the gallery. For Window Project 2012 -2018 exhibition, he continues to use cyanotype solution to create selfportraits that have a performativity element to them. His self portrait series were all made at a performative games night where the participants actions directly influenced the resulting composition of each work.\r\n\r\nWright and Vandame are the Summer 2016 Window Project winners with their work, All of Us Will be Gone that uses a one-way mirror vinyl on each of the windows to reflect the immediate surroundings and directly engage the viewer within the work. From the interior of the gallery, the audience can further participate with the exhibition by looking at the viewers looking at themselves; but never seen. For this exhibition, Wright and Vandame have created one of a kind star shaped canvases that are covered in silver foil.\r\n\r\nAnna Beatriz Fernandes was the Spring 2016 winner of the Window Project with her work, Memory of a Non-Place. Five projections were presented onto an oscillating translucent veil on the first floor windows, conveying movement as the fabric swings. The photographs guide the viewers through a collection of imagery of the ocean, where traditional notions of time and identity are no longer present. Her work for this exhibition entitled Engrama is a series of cyanotypes from a research on family photo albums. Through the evocation of real and ctitious memories Engrama explores the idea of a link between past and present and the viewer’s possibility of a self-recognition through the other.\r\n\r\nHolly Stevenson was the summer 2015 Window Project winner with her work, < OPEN > which explored the concept of being in two places at once via the consideration of the subject being both open and closed. In this exhibition she will be exhibiting a variety of new ceramic earthenware works. These are all apart of her latest project entitled, Freud’s Ashtray.\r\n\r\nUlla Nolden was the 2015 winter Window Project winner with her work, Pure Movement 2 & 3 where she used her own visual representation and perception to depict the changing shapes of sunlight as well as insect swarms. Her work for this show uses a series of screens representing variations of computer algorithms in different environments to examine even further this notion she had in the window project. Inside each of the three screen structures, a Raspberry Pi computer processes and visualises the algorithm in real time.\r\n\r\nAlexander Duncan was the Spring 2015 Window Project winner. His work was a scene of calm, serene waters that lled the top floor windows of the gallery. His work exhibited for this show continues through the same series except this time in two large scale photographs. These two Lacustrine works will be accompanied by a few of his Like Swimming sculptures. The artist uses floats borrowed from his local swimming pool that are cast and colour matched before being returned. He is interested in the floats’ marks, scratches and bites which suggest a childlike connection to play but also to fear and anxiety.\r\n\r\nJulia Vogl was the inaugural window project winner in 2012 with her work Olympic Tides. Coinciding with the London Olympics, her work was inspired by the Olympic rings, each one representing a continent participating in the games, and also by the fact that daily our lives are being pushed and pulled by the Earth’s Rotation and the value of money. For this exhibition she will be exhibiting Filter Fun, originally commissioned for a Tate Late event. This work is made up of free standing color fields that allow visitors to engage with them as analogue filters for their photos and social media exchange while using the hashtag #filterfun.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n#windowproject", "start_time": "2018-08-03T12:00:00.000000Z", "end_time": "2018-08-31T12:00:00.000000Z", "is_all_day_event": false, "is_end_time_unknown": false, "auction_results_added": false, "is_featured": false, "is_paid_art_fair": false, "address": "39 Dover Street\r\nLondon \r\nW1S 4NN", "city": "City of Westminster", "geolocation": "51.5083031,-0.14239224510138437", "price_currency": "EUR", "exhibitors_previous_year": 0, "exhibitors_this_year": 0, "visitors_this_year": 0, "visitors_previous_year": 0, "buy_tickets_url": null, "contact_name": null, "email": null, "external_url": null, "phone": null, "additional_info": "", "press_release": null, "is_online_only": false, "banner_logo": null, "artists": [], "artworks": [], "magazines": [], "additional_images": [] }, { "id": 2171, "author": { "id": "f56c0111-3ee1-40c2-84b4-88f2f6bdd35e", "username": "Mirko", "slug": "mirko", "first_name": "Mirko", "last_name": "Nikolic", "display_name": "Mirko Nikolic", "display_name_full": "Mirko Nikolic", "email": "mirko.nikolic81@gmail.com", "telephone": "" }, "price": null, "featured_image": { "id": 695, "image": { "full_size_webp": "https://d16kd6gzalkogb.cloudfront.net/__sized__/event_images/cranio-event-11-thumbnail_webp-9999x9999.webp", "crop_small": "https://d16kd6gzalkogb.cloudfront.net/__sized__/event_images/cranio-event-11-crop-c0-5__0-5-270x152-70.jpg", "crop_medium": "https://d16kd6gzalkogb.cloudfront.net/__sized__/event_images/cranio-event-11-crop-c0-5__0-5-524x294-70.jpg", "crop_big_webp": "https://d16kd6gzalkogb.cloudfront.net/__sized__/event_images/cranio-event-11-crop_webp-555x312.webp", "crop_smallest_webp": "https://d16kd6gzalkogb.cloudfront.net/__sized__/event_images/cranio-event-11-crop_webp-179x179.webp", "full_size": "https://d16kd6gzalkogb.cloudfront.net/event_images/cranio-event-11.jpg", "crop_smallest": "https://d16kd6gzalkogb.cloudfront.net/__sized__/event_images/cranio-event-11-crop-c0-5__0-5-179x179-70.jpg", "crop_small_webp": "https://d16kd6gzalkogb.cloudfront.net/__sized__/event_images/cranio-event-11-crop_webp-270x152.webp", "crop_medium_webp": "https://d16kd6gzalkogb.cloudfront.net/__sized__/event_images/cranio-event-11-crop_webp-524x294.webp", "crop_big": "https://d16kd6gzalkogb.cloudfront.net/__sized__/event_images/cranio-event-11-crop-c0-5__0-5-555x312-70.jpg" }, "created_at": "2020-03-24T04:02:06.345787Z", "updated_at": "2021-09-13T10:34:19.691097Z", "is_converted_to_webp": true, "caption": null, "alt_text": "cranio-event-11", "description": null, "uploaded_by": null }, "venue": { "id": 471, "name": "VERTICAL GALLERY", "slug": "vertical-gallery", "city": "Chicago", "country": { "code": "US", "name": "United States of America" }, "geolocation": "41.8998836,-87.68734030000002", "artworks_for_sale_count": 147, "featured_image": { "id": 2569, "image": { "full_size_webp": "https://d16kd6gzalkogb.cloudfront.net/__sized__/venue_images/Stinkfish_Vertical-Gallery_opening-4-thumbnail_webp-9999x9999.webp", "crop_small_webp": "https://d16kd6gzalkogb.cloudfront.net/__sized__/venue_images/Stinkfish_Vertical-Gallery_opening-4-crop_webp-265x149.webp", "crop_big_webp": "https://d16kd6gzalkogb.cloudfront.net/__sized__/venue_images/Stinkfish_Vertical-Gallery_opening-4-crop_webp-760x499.webp", "crop_medium_webp": "https://d16kd6gzalkogb.cloudfront.net/__sized__/venue_images/Stinkfish_Vertical-Gallery_opening-4-crop_webp-558x279.webp", "crop_medium": "https://d16kd6gzalkogb.cloudfront.net/__sized__/venue_images/Stinkfish_Vertical-Gallery_opening-4-crop-c0-5__0-5-558x279-70.jpg", "crop_big": "https://d16kd6gzalkogb.cloudfront.net/__sized__/venue_images/Stinkfish_Vertical-Gallery_opening-4-crop-c0-5__0-5-760x499-70.jpg", "full_size": "https://d16kd6gzalkogb.cloudfront.net/venue_images/Stinkfish_Vertical-Gallery_opening-4.jpg", "crop_small": "https://d16kd6gzalkogb.cloudfront.net/__sized__/venue_images/Stinkfish_Vertical-Gallery_opening-4-crop-c0-5__0-5-265x149-70.jpg" }, "created_at": "2020-04-29T16:20:14.607754Z", "updated_at": "2021-09-14T13:32:39.801154Z", "is_converted_to_webp": true, "caption": null, "alt_text": null, "description": null, "uploaded_by": null }, "response_time": null }, "category": { "id": 1, "image": null, "slug": "gallery-shows", "created_at": "2020-06-02T15:33:40.525202Z", "updated_at": "2021-03-29T12:19:01.299372Z", "name": "Gallery Shows", "description": "", "meta_description": null, "caption": null, "tooltip": "", "editor_notes": "" }, "country": "US", "publish_status": "published", "published_at": "2018-07-24T19:38:50.000000Z", "publish_time": null, "slug": "cranio-jungle", "created_at": "2018-07-24T19:38:50.000000Z", "updated_at": "2020-07-16T08:12:49.555312Z", "summary": "Cranio - Lancaster Blvd., Lancaster, CA 93534\r\n\r\nLos Angeles, CA – Dave Pressler, the most prolific “robot artist” in the world, is exhibiting a full retrospective of his 20+ year career at Lancaster’s Museum of Art History (MOAH), from August 4 to September 30, 2018. The opening reception will be Saturday, August 4, 2018 from 4pm - 6pm.\r\n\r\nThe self-described “Blue Collar Artist” has been working for over two decades in every medium, including drawing, painting, sculpting, character design, stop-motion animation, animatronics, and even co-creating the Emmy-nominated Nickelodeon show “Robot And Monster.” Titled “Idea to Object,” the exhibit will map out the narrative of Pressler’s career, divided into sections focusing on each different medium he’s worked in and how he made his ideas a reality.\r\n\r\n“I don’t look at this exhibit as just a retrospective on all the work I’ve done,” says Pressler. “What I really want it to do is de-mystify the creative process and demonstrate to people that art is just doing the work to take the ideas in your head and bring them into the physical world. There is a way for you to create them for a living.”\r\n\r\n“Pressler’s work appeals to audiences of all ages,” says Andi Campognone, Director of MOAH. “His work is a great example of the combination of strong contemporary concepts and expert craft, and we are so excited to exhibit his work for both the Lancaster and Greater LA communities.”\r\n\r\n“Idea to Object” will be on view from August 4 to September 30, 2018, with an opening reception on Saturday, August 4 from 4pm - 6pm. Whatever we can’t see on the ground, we can probably see on a smart phone. And, as modern life has encroached on indigenous tribes in the name of scientific research and through land grabs, there are precious few un-contacted communities left in the world. While we can’t return the land and people to being untouched, Indonesian-based, German photographer, Fred Stichnoth hopes that by capturing and sharing the tribes he encounters, it might increase our awareness to preserve these ancient civilisations a little longer.\r\n\r\nGrowing up, Fred was always drawn to adventure movies set in tropical locations. “I love ancient themes, from Egypt to Indonesia. I’ve spent a long time travelling around the world, being drawn to what is considered taboo,” he says. So, it was a dream come true when he located from his native Germany to the Indonesian Island of Bali. From here he has been able to explore some of the remotest areas in the East Indies and the tribes that call these places home. A home that is fast disappearing, along with their customs, legends, ceremony and regalia.\r\n\r\nElusive, beautiful and hidden, Stichnoth’s images from his East Indies Series are like birds of paradise. Catching sight of these rare creatures, documented in their natural habitat against neutral backdrops, they are fragile specimens to observe. They turn their heads and bodies away displaying bright plumage. Shy, even a little frightened, but allowing the viewer to admire their exotic beauty. “Indeed, if you get too close though, it feels like they might fly away at any moment,” Fred agrees, explaining that it can take over eight weeks to prepare a shoot, earning the trust of tribes, understanding their customs and sourcing the correct motifs, sometimes creating headdresses himself guided by the keepers of tradition in each remote village he visits.\r\n\r\nThe results are stunning. “The idea was to create a special sound,” explains Fred. “The attitude and positioning of the female subjects was very important. East Indies women are shy and tend to hide, they don’t look at you.” Shot on location using natural light, Fred employs classic techniques to create a study of his female subjects without the resulting picture feeling invasive. “Around 1860 photographers began using things like a simple bed sheet to create a neutral background. I followed this old idea so as not to disturb or detract from the main focus of the image,” he explains. What is achieved is a portrait of a woman that is at once delicate yet strong, vulnerable yet mighty. Pops of colour delivered through the use of the foliage featured are a counterpoint to the largely neutral palette. But it is a reverence for the colour of skin that is striking.\r\n\r\n“I wanted to inspire people with these pictures. Show them something beautiful of a fast disappearing world,” muses Stichnoth. “What does progress mean for indigenous people? We bring them diseases, prohibit their faith, we give them underwear, subdue them, steal their land and natural resources, destroy ancient cultures and habitats in the shortest possible time. I am entering a world that is getting lost more and more every day. I just want us to remember them before it is all gone.”", "start_time": "2018-08-06T12:00:00.000000Z", "end_time": "2018-09-09T12:00:00.000000Z", "is_all_day_event": false, "is_end_time_unknown": false, "auction_results_added": false, "is_featured": false, "is_paid_art_fair": false, "address": "On-Line Exhibition", "city": "Old Toronto", "geolocation": "43.6360095,-79.4188537", "price_currency": "EUR", "exhibitors_previous_year": 0, "exhibitors_this_year": 0, "visitors_this_year": 0, "visitors_previous_year": 0, "buy_tickets_url": null, "contact_name": null, "email": null, "external_url": null, "phone": null, "additional_info": "", "press_release": null, "is_online_only": false, "banner_logo": null, "artists": [ 11551 ], "artworks": [ 13834, 13835, 13836, 13837, 13838, 13839, 13840, 13841, 13842, 13843, 13844 ], "magazines": [], "additional_images": [] }, { "id": 2165, "author": { "id": "2c83a774-5ea2-4702-9e29-ffb9740dbb2a", "username": "Milos Antonic", "slug": "milos-antonic", "first_name": "Milos", "last_name": "Antonic", "display_name": "Milos Antonic", "display_name_full": "Milos Antonic", "email": "milosantonic5@gmail.com", "telephone": null }, "price": null, "featured_image": { "id": 694, "image": { "full_size_webp": "https://d16kd6gzalkogb.cloudfront.net/__sized__/event_images/Sydney-Laurence-Mount-Mckinley-63-North-Latitude-Alaska-Altitude-20.390-Feet-circa-1911-12-Detail-thumbnail_webp-9999x9999.webp", "crop_small": "https://d16kd6gzalkogb.cloudfront.net/__sized__/event_images/Sydney-Laurence-Mount-Mckinley-63-North-Latitude-Alaska-Altitude-20.390-Feet-circa-1911-12-Detail-crop-c0-5__0-5-270x152-70.jpg", "crop_medium": "https://d16kd6gzalkogb.cloudfront.net/__sized__/event_images/Sydney-Laurence-Mount-Mckinley-63-North-Latitude-Alaska-Altitude-20.390-Feet-circa-1911-12-Detail-crop-c0-5__0-5-524x294-70.jpg", "crop_big_webp": "https://d16kd6gzalkogb.cloudfront.net/__sized__/event_images/Sydney-Laurence-Mount-Mckinley-63-North-Latitude-Alaska-Altitude-20.390-Feet-circa-1911-12-Detail-crop_webp-555x312.webp", "crop_smallest_webp": "https://d16kd6gzalkogb.cloudfront.net/__sized__/event_images/Sydney-Laurence-Mount-Mckinley-63-North-Latitude-Alaska-Altitude-20.390-Feet-circa-1911-12-Detail-crop_webp-179x179.webp", "full_size": "https://d16kd6gzalkogb.cloudfront.net/event_images/Sydney-Laurence-Mount-Mckinley-63-North-Latitude-Alaska-Altitude-20.390-Feet-circa-1911-12-Detail.jpg", "crop_smallest": "https://d16kd6gzalkogb.cloudfront.net/__sized__/event_images/Sydney-Laurence-Mount-Mckinley-63-North-Latitude-Alaska-Altitude-20.390-Feet-circa-1911-12-Detail-crop-c0-5__0-5-179x179-70.jpg", "crop_small_webp": "https://d16kd6gzalkogb.cloudfront.net/__sized__/event_images/Sydney-Laurence-Mount-Mckinley-63-North-Latitude-Alaska-Altitude-20.390-Feet-circa-1911-12-Detail-crop_webp-270x152.webp", "crop_medium_webp": "https://d16kd6gzalkogb.cloudfront.net/__sized__/event_images/Sydney-Laurence-Mount-Mckinley-63-North-Latitude-Alaska-Altitude-20.390-Feet-circa-1911-12-Detail-crop_webp-524x294.webp", "crop_big": "https://d16kd6gzalkogb.cloudfront.net/__sized__/event_images/Sydney-Laurence-Mount-Mckinley-63-North-Latitude-Alaska-Altitude-20.390-Feet-circa-1911-12-Detail-crop-c0-5__0-5-555x312-70.jpg" }, "created_at": "2020-03-24T04:00:13.701556Z", "updated_at": "2021-09-13T10:34:19.619819Z", "is_converted_to_webp": true, "caption": null, "alt_text": "Sydney Laurence - Lancaster Blvd., Lancaster, CA 93534 • Following the packed opening reception for Dave Pressler’s career retrospective, “Idea to Object,” Lancaster Museum of Art History (MOAH) is thrilled to announce an artist talk and personal tour of the exhibit by Dave Pressler himself on Saturday, August 18 at 1:30pm. The exhibit showcases work from the broad scope his career, including pen & ink sketches, paintings, character sculpts he created for kids entertainment studios like The Jim Henson Company, vinyl collectible toys, the stop-motion animation set for How to Do Everything With Garrick and Marvin, never-before-seen large-scale robot sculptures, a screening room for his Emmy-nominated Nickelodeon show Robot and Monster, and more. • The exhibit maps out not only the narrative of Pressler’s entire career, but provides a deep look at how art is actually made — if you do the work. \"If someone is interested in getting into the profession, hopefully it will be a little inspiration that if you put the work in and put the time in and just keep doing it, you can, in some form, express yourself,\" says Pressler. • This is a rare opportunity to participate in an intimate dialogue with one of the most notable “robot artists,” as well as learn something about your own creative process. • “Idea to Object” will be on view until September 30, 2018.
