The American Regionalist art movement rose in the 1930s as a response to the Great Depression and was defined by a traditionalist realist style that appealed to popular American sensibilities of the time. The movement gave rise to a subsequent proliferation of realist art, making a lasting impact as a style that bridged academic realism with American Modernism, breaking American realist art away from the European tradition.\r\n\r\nDanny Galieote’s masterfully rendered paintings tie the stylistic and thematic trends of the Regionalists to contemporary socio-cultural themes. Rendered in a faded, tonal palette, Galieote builds his compositions with references to classic Americana, presenting quotidian scenes of American life. Focusing on the figure, Galieote sets his compositions in the the iconic decades of mid-century America, incorporating whimsical elements with modern social concerns. Many of the scenes include psychological elements such as hints at the inner, intrusive thoughts of the figures, imbuing the light hearted imagery with deeper connotations and illuminating timeless truths of the dualities of human nature. \r\n\r\nA California native, Galieote began his art career in Disney animation studios, where he was a top animator for films such as the Lion King and Tarzan as a character artist, honing his skill at hand drawing and the human figure. Pure color, pure form", "content": "With a solo exhibition by Wolfram Ullrich (Würzburg, Germany, 1961) – the first in Italy by the German artist – the Dep Art Gallery in Milan closes its exhibition program for summer vacation. Through a vast selection of works that illustrate the artist’s characteristic means of expression, \"Wolfram Ullrich. Pure Color, Pure Form\", from June 21st to September 29th 2018, precedes the public event where Ullrich will be the protagonist at the MARCA museum in Catanzaro this November.<br />\r\n<br />\r\nVisitors will be able to admire around twenty works in acrylic on steel, all made specifically for the show, of large, medium, and small dimensions.<br />\r\nUllrich’s three-dimensional geometric abstractions are the result of assembling steel segments prepared so that the acrylic, which is applied in successive layers, will adhere onto them.<br />\r\nIn an attempt to analytically understand the works of Ullrich, from an overall to a detail view of the segments, we find perspective incoherence the artist accentuates with millimetric precision. If on the contrary a synthetic approach is adopted, starting from the fragments and then the total form, the reliefs start to turn on themselves: depending on the viewer’s position, the works bend, they become soft, they fold in tight fissures of shadows. Joyner was Corey Helford Gallery’s very first solo show back in 2006. In Glazed Machinations, Joyner creates a love letter to California, infusing the coastal landscape and its cities with his signature vintage robots and donuts. The new body of work, comprised of over a dozen medium and large scale paintings, as well as pencil and charcoal drawings, will also feature Corgis, sea serpents, new robot characters he’s never painted before, and more.\r\n\r\n“I just like them,” Joyner explains of his choice to focus on robots and donuts. “I like the way they look. I like the way donuts taste.” Apparently he’s not alone. Eric’s works are constantly being discovered by new collectors worldwide, and his robots and donuts-themed paintings already grace the walls of some of the top art-collecting luminaries of both the entertainment and business fields. In his latest book, “Robotic Existentialism: The Art of Eric Joyner,” released in February 2018, Joyner placed his robots and donuts in classic art, in front of the computer, in ancient times and more. In Glazed Machinations, the work is inspired by his recent trip to Las Vegas, Yosemite and the Lost Coast of Northern California. \r\n\r\nShortly before the premiere of his Corey Helford show, the next issue of the newly rebooted MAD Magazine, featuring his commissioned cover, will hit newsstands. This is his first time showing at the gallery. The exhibit is a new experiment for the artist, finding ways to implement glitter (or as he calls it, “stardust”) as a medium in nearly every new piece—as paint, an accent, even a background. \r\n\r\nIn It’s Not Glitter, It’s Stardust, CANTSTOPGOODBOY is also premiering some never-before seen characters, including a new astronaut, a cowboy, additions to his rockstars series, and some new twists on the popular figures that have appeared in many of his works. Lions will continue to be a recurring theme. \r\n\r\nGlitter isn’t the only new medium CANTSTOPGOODBOY is experimenting with for this exhibition: he’s going 16-bit as well. Recently, he acquired a vintage and fully operational arcade cabinet—with a joystick and buttons made for mashing. He completely refinished the outside to turn it into a top-to-bottom CANTSTOPGOODBOY artwork. But the inside got a makeover as well. One of his colleagues is a talented coder, and in a matter of two days, built a vintage 16-bit video game from scratch where players must recreate one of CANTSTOPGOODBOY’s signature artworks.\r\n\r\nThe opening reception for CANTSTOPGOODBOY’s It’s Not Glitter, It’s Stardust will be hosted Saturday, June 23 from 7pm - 11pm in the Gallery Two. Co-curated by Caro Buermann and Waxploitation Records founder Jeff Antebi, this is the companion exhibition of the children’s benefit book project of the same name: a 350 page coffee table art book with short stories written by world famous musicians such as Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Frank Black, Devendra Banhart, among others, accompanied by original art by living legends such as Anthony Lister, Dan Baldwin, Swoon, Will Barras, James Jean, Ronzo, Kai & Sunny, and many more. A portion of proceeds from both the book project and the art show will benefit Room to Read, 826 National, Pencils of Promise, and War Child. The exhibit features over two dozen drawings, paintings and illustrations from the book. \r\n\r\nReleased in 2016, Stories For Ways & Means is ten years in the making, and also includes animated short films featuring narration from Zach Galifianakis, Danny Devito, Nick Offerman, and more.\r\n\r\n“I’ve always been interested in songwriters who craft compelling stories to music, and painters who tell stories with a single canvas. Stories for Ways & Means allows me an opportunity to blend both into one project” explains curator Jeff Antebi, who created the book. “The artists I collaborated with are ones who I felt represented ‘outsiders’ because children in some ways are also ‘outsiders’ sometimes, viewing the world of adults around them.
