Abovyan\r\nYerevan, Armenia.", "title": "Simon Fisher - Entities and shadows", "content": "This is an exhibition of performance artefacts, it’s about a process of making performance and how performative outcomes and processes in themselves can, in turn, render the creation of artefacts in an interesting procedural feedback loop. \r\nMy performance making practice provides a platform for creating painting, sculpture, collage, digital still images, video performance sequences and live performance that share a commitment to presence over action and expressionism over naturalism. \r\nI often utilise traditional mediums such as paint, pencil, paper, canvas, scissors and glue as a starting point. The “playing “ of these simple elements allows for unexpected interrelationships to occur and sometimes initiates a process which allows a performance to make itself, to emerge from the logic established by its own making, a way towards allowing the work to have a life of its own. \r\nI am fascinated about how we project on ourselves outwardly and inwardly, what others project on us and what we project on others. I want to reveal our other selves, the ones we don’t know or haven’t yet met, create creatures of unknown origins or connect with our forebears so that we might better understand those qualities and energies that they have bequeathed us. \r\nThe twelve small canvases are investigations of an ongoing project I call the Butterfly ceremony that I have derived from the predictions of the kikuyu prophet Mugo Kibiru concerning the colonisation and decolonisation of Kenya where I was born. \r\nThey are a means of creating a range of standing butterfly ceremonial figures in projection. The video is a collage of differing stills and short sequences that I use to develop themes and materials that can then be utilised in a live context or reconfigured into new video or still material. What Goes On? will be Drew’s inaugural solo exhibition at Spoke Art, where he will be exhibiting his ongoing series of paintings that combine and re-contextualize two distinct elements - characters from the beloved Peanuts gang and 90’s rap lyrics. \r\n\r\nDrew’s narrative based work takes on the format of a comic still, using rap lyrics as dialogue for Peanuts characters. Ranging from the existential to the absurd, the artist creates a new universe for the wholesome Peanuts characters, calling to question the meaning of life, perseverance, relationships and loyalty. \r\n\r\nConsisting of 13 new acrylic paintings, Drew uses a limited palette comprised almost exclusively of black, white and yellow. The artist’s largest work to date, titled Maintain (Nas) will be exhibited, depicting Linus kneeling in prayer at his bedside, supplicating for strength to “maintain.”\r\n\r\nAbout the exhibition, artist Mark Drew states, \"The 90’s rap music I surround myself with is made up of layered samples from older music (and often a different genre). Taking a drum beat from one record, and adding a vocal or riff from another to form something new. To paraphrase RUN-DMC: making something out of nothing, or expressing yourself with what you have readily available. JoAnne Artman Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition that juxtaposes urban grit with the delicacy of flora, highlighting the often surprising congruities in the beauty of both. Much of the motifs in art and design are borrowed from the natural world in which the processes of regeneration, life and decay are in constant flux and motion. An especially important part of this framework is the flora, or the particular plants of a region, habitat or geographical area which are as diverse, unique and localized as the constitution and customs of any urban population. Artists Penelope Gottlieb, Anna Kincaide, and Greg Miller are artists whose work addresses this intersection between the beauty of nature and the ethos of urbanity. \r\n\r\nPenelope Gottlieb’s paintings on paper, panel and canvas are a rich riot of color and texture that engage the senses while also commentating on the destructive nature of urban development. Featuring representations of various lost species, the works are also part of an ongoing project by the artist that explores themes of environmentalism and the global ecological crisis. These highly detailed renderings present a tapestry of various plants and flowers that vibrate with energy, seemingly on the verge of breaking through the compositional plane. Based on the artist’s own imaginings as well as historical accounts, the images are deceptively decorative, providing endless complexities in concept and composition on subsequent investigation. \r\n\r\nAnna Kincaide’s fantastical works in oil on canvas juxtapose a minimalist, tonal approach to the figure with bountiful, bursting bouquets of botanical topiary rendered in a dazzling array of color. Kincaide pays equal attention to the sleek, sinuous lines of the human form, as to the layered, organic forms of the flora. These surreal dreamscapes are reminiscent of studio portraits in format and styling, paying homage to the tradition of portraiture. Borrowing inspiration from fashion and design history, Kincaide’s work explores anonymity and transformation as well as contemporary socio-cultural signposts of status and identity.\r\n\r\nGreg Miller’s mixed media works are instantly recognizable, drawing on his specific cultural lens and Californian roots. Fragility, nostalgia, as well as the fleeting nature of cultural ephemera and collective memory are explored in works that effortlessly blend familiar imagery of the golden age of print media into new narratives. Miller’s visual collages are an amalgamation of grit and texture, the layers a visual representation of the destruction rendered by the passage of time. In Miller’s newest body of work, floral elements add a new framework of meaning in his exploration of memory and social history. \r\n \r\nThese artists will inspire, provoke, engage and mesmerize. It is the first collaboration between the artist and Spotte Art platform. The collection is available for purchase online from May 10th, 2018. Kwon's practice is concerned with the construction of the painting space and the expansion of painting through incorporating environmental conditions. Jaena intends to create viable painting moments as a spatial experience, heightened by the bodily movement, tactile emotion, and the viewer’s subjective involvement. Each shape is cut and sanded to have ergonomic features responding to body parts and the bodily movement. Each work is an experiment with formal elements such as the surface, support, color, light, texture, and how this vocabulary composes a space. Such analytical approach investigates how paintings can implicate space beyond its surface through illusory, psychological, or emotional means. In between tangible matter and intangible effect, the intention is to weave those concepts together.\u2028\u2028\r\n\r\nJaena Kwon (b. 1986, South Korea) lives and works in New York. She received an MFA in Painting and Printmaking at Yale University School of Art, CT and her BFA at Seoul National University, South Korea. Her works have been shown at The Painting Center, NY; Amy Simon Fine Art, CT; SongEun Art Space, Seoul; and ING Art Project; Seoul. She has received awards including 2014 Boston Young Contemporaries RGH Prize, the 2014 Carol Schlosberg Memorial Prize, and the 2008 Hwajeon Paint Award. This will be her first solo exhibition with Corey Helford Gallery.\r\n\r\nThe work in True Colors is a study of life’s contrasts, explored through Prończuk-Kuziak’s surreal animal hybrids, consisting of fur, feathers, eggshells, woven fabrics, clouds, plants, flowers—a collection of items usually found in still-life paintings. “Animals in my paintings become personifications of human emotions and stories related to them,” says Prończuk-Kuziak. “They are the medium I use in order to communicate.
